As Kendrick Lamar finishes off the US leg-part of his ‘the BigSteppers Tour’, the Compton based rapper performed three songs off his latest album at Saturday Night Live. In true Kendrick fashion, the performance was a prime example of serious artistry and poetic storytelling that goes beyond lyrical rap grandeur.Especially the execution of Father Time featuring UK based vocalist Sampha, is a prime example to how the artist stages his performances into an artful extension of storytelling sensibilities. Situation amongst a stack of books, bed and a recliner seat the two artists are surrounded by a set of walls that creep up on them as they grapple with the personal overcoming of toxic masculinity, accompanied emotional reservedness and how such self work might be less about solistic study but instead are a collective effort.
