Dealing with the involvement of their grandfathers in the Dutch colonial war fighting the independence of Indonesia in the 1940’s, filmmaker Daan van Citters and actor Joenoes Polnaya documented their personal journey through the archipelago, tracing the footsteps of each of their individual elders ‘on the wrong side of history.'

As Daan and Joenoes revisit the places their grandfathers fought at, the two interrogate and acknowledge the violent role their family members had in the colonial rule. By daring to stay open, honest and vulnerable, their insights shake the core of their personal and cultural beliefs. The resulting document provides a humbling and intimate account that deals with notions of good vs. bad, and the responsibility of a current generation to confront colonial conceptions that still propel inequality to our current day.

The New Amsterdam Film Company production is the opening film of the Movies that Matter Festival and will hit Dutch theaters on April 6th.
