The Backrooms is an urban legend that began in 2019 with a creepypasta of unknown origin that showed a carpeted room with yellow wallpaper and fluorescent lighting. The video is credited with triggering the internet’s obsession with ‘liminal spaces’, the subject of an aesthetic portraying empty or abandoned places that appear eerie, forlorn and often surreal.

The myth was further expanded over the years, with the addition of new layers and creatures to encounter in the labyrinth. One such creator is 17-year-old filmmaker and VFX artist Kane Pixels, who has been approached by A24 to expand his work into a full feature film with assistance from 21 Laps, the company behind the likes of Stranger Things and Arrival. In the meantime, get familiar with his current work here.
